Coaching

The special needs of expatriates

Expatriates and their managers have a special need for coaching. They face unique challenges, ones for which traditional management education does not prepare them. The rules of business are different; the rules of interpersonal interaction are different; the rules of day-to-day life are different. Expectations are high. All of these changes must be dealt with simultaneously.

The expatriate's manager may have similar cultural differences in dealing with the expatriate. The expatriate needs a trusted person as an anchor point in this time of turmoil. But lacking a local support network at the beginning of the assignment, the expatriate may not know to whom to turn for help.

The coach can be the expatriate's anchor. The coaching environment provides a safe haven in which the expatriate can regroup, try new behaviors, and get immediate feedback from a trusted, non-judgmental person. Through coaching, the expatriate builds heightened powers of observation, both of self and of others. By learning to observe and self-correct, the expatriate gains the confidence to adapt and succeed in the new environment.
